Bama game notes / Bowl update

Jerraud Powers Stadium

Cornerback Jerraud Powers received a scare late in the game when he was bitten by a security dog in the South endzone.

Powers has five distinct bite marks on his left hand.

On Bama’s final possession of the game, they attempted a pass on 1st-and-10 from AU’s 32-yard line that sailed through the endzone. Powers was in coverage and when he slowed down near the back of the endzone, a police dog jumped up and bit him on the left hand, causing bleeding.

Tuberville was able to joke about the play Sunday.

“That’s the first time I’ve had anybody have a dog bite at a football game,” he said. “The players were kidding around with him at the end of the game. He said: ‘You young guys just wait, next year you younger guys will be playing in Jerraud Powers Stadium.’”

Tuberville did say, however, that having police dogs on the sidelines during games is a policy that may need further review.

“Obviously it’s something we’ll have to look at and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Tuberville.

Going bowling

Arkansas’ upset win over No. 1 LSU Friday shook up the SEC bowl picture a bit. It now appears likely that the Razorbacks, who finished 8-4, are likely to play a Big 12 opponent in the Cotton Bowl. The Outback Bowl will have a choice between Auburn (8-4) and Tennessee (9-3), assuming the Vols lose in the SEC Championship game to LSU (10-2).

The SEC still appears likely to receive two BCS Bowl bids with the winner of the SEC Championship receiving an automatic bid and Georgia (10-2), which is ranked No. 4 in the latest BCS Standings, receiving an at-large bid.

If the Outback Bowl chooses Tennessee, Auburn would likely end up in the Chick-fil-A Bowl against the ACC’s No. 2 team.

If Tennessee beats LSU, then Auburn is virtually assured of a trip to Atlanta.

The Tigers last played in the Chick-fil-A bowl in 2001, losing to North Carolina 16-10 in Tuberville’s third season. AU has not played in the Outback since 1995, losing 43-14 to Penn State.

“Really, it doesn’t make any difference,” said Tuberville. “Both are good games. I’ve never coached in the Outback Bowl, that would be a good game for our team. But the Chick-Fil-A bowl was great the last time we went there, we didn’t play very well, but they do a great job.”
