That Answers That Question….. Sherman to succeed Franchione

Houston Texans assistant Mike Sherman will be introduced as Texas A&M‘s football coach at a noon ET news conference Monday, a source close to the situation told ESPN’s Joe Schad.

The Houston Chronicle first reported the story on its Web site Monday morning.

Sherman declined comment Sunday on reports that he was Texas A&M’s leading candidate to replace Dennis Franchione, who resigned Friday following the Aggies’ 38-30 victory over Texas.

Sherman, who turns 53 on Dec. 19, has been the Texans’ assistant head coach for two seasons under Gary Kubiak, a former A&M quarterback. Sherman became the offensive coordinator this season.

When Sherman left the Texans’ locker room after Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns, he was trailed by several reporters who asked for comment on the Texas A&M situation. He politely declined, saying he would only talk about the loss.

Earlier, Houston owner Bob McNair addressed Sherman’s status.

“I think the report says he may be the leading candidate,” McNair said. “They [Texas A&M] haven’t called me. That’s not to say they haven’t called someone in the organization. I don’t think they could find anyone better. He’s an outstanding coach. We certainly would not stand in his way.”

Like Kubiak, Sherman has A&M ties. He was the Aggies’ offensive line coach from 1989-93 and then in 1995-96 under R.C Slocum. Kubiak coached A&M’s running backs in 1992 and ’93.

Sherman coached the Green Bay Packers from 2000-05, guiding the team to three NFC North titles. Under Sherman, the Packers produced two of the four highest-scoring seasons in franchise history.

The Aggies went 32-28 in five seasons under Franchione and couldn’t gain ground on the Big 12′s elite teams. A&M hasn’t won the league title since 1998.

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was also thought to be a strong candidate to succeed Franchione.

Bama game notes / Bowl update

Jerraud Powers Stadium

Cornerback Jerraud Powers received a scare late in the game when he was bitten by a security dog in the South endzone.

Powers has five distinct bite marks on his left hand.

On Bama’s final possession of the game, they attempted a pass on 1st-and-10 from AU’s 32-yard line that sailed through the endzone. Powers was in coverage and when he slowed down near the back of the endzone, a police dog jumped up and bit him on the left hand, causing bleeding.

Tuberville was able to joke about the play Sunday.

“That’s the first time I’ve had anybody have a dog bite at a football game,” he said. “The players were kidding around with him at the end of the game. He said: ‘You young guys just wait, next year you younger guys will be playing in Jerraud Powers Stadium.’”

Tuberville did say, however, that having police dogs on the sidelines during games is a policy that may need further review.

“Obviously it’s something we’ll have to look at and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Tuberville.

Going bowling

Arkansas’ upset win over No. 1 LSU Friday shook up the SEC bowl picture a bit. It now appears likely that the Razorbacks, who finished 8-4, are likely to play a Big 12 opponent in the Cotton Bowl. The Outback Bowl will have a choice between Auburn (8-4) and Tennessee (9-3), assuming the Vols lose in the SEC Championship game to LSU (10-2).

The SEC still appears likely to receive two BCS Bowl bids with the winner of the SEC Championship receiving an automatic bid and Georgia (10-2), which is ranked No. 4 in the latest BCS Standings, receiving an at-large bid.

If the Outback Bowl chooses Tennessee, Auburn would likely end up in the Chick-fil-A Bowl against the ACC’s No. 2 team.

If Tennessee beats LSU, then Auburn is virtually assured of a trip to Atlanta.

The Tigers last played in the Chick-fil-A bowl in 2001, losing to North Carolina 16-10 in Tuberville’s third season. AU has not played in the Outback since 1995, losing 43-14 to Penn State.

“Really, it doesn’t make any difference,” said Tuberville. “Both are good games. I’ve never coached in the Outback Bowl, that would be a good game for our team. But the Chick-Fil-A bowl was great the last time we went there, we didn’t play very well, but they do a great job.”
