Raymond Cotton Decommits

Fort Meade (Fla.) Meade four-star quarterback Raymond Cotton has decommitted from Auburn, his father Raymond Cotton, Sr. said Monday.

Cotton’s decision came moments after he learned Auburn coach and his area recruiter James Willis was informed he would no longer be coaching on the Plains.

Auburn hired Gene Chizik Saturday to replace Tommy Tuberville. Willis and the other Tiger assistants who had stayed on to help the Tigers recruit during the search were informed to look for new jobs Sunday night.

That was the last straw, said Cotton, Sr.

“I just talked to James Willis and he was let go,” said Cotton, Sr. “Coach Willis got let go and Raymond had built a good relationship with him and all of the guys that were down there. None of those guys are there anymore. He’s going to look elsewhere.”

Cotton, Sr. said Willis was integral in keeping his son committed to the Tigers during Auburn’s coaching search. But with Willis now gone, so is his son’s commitment.

“He was going to allow Coach Willis to come up here, but Coach Willis was let go. Everyone Raymond had built a relationship with Auburn was let go,” said Cotton, Sr. “He’s now going to take his commitment elsewhere.”

Auburn coach Phillip Lolley, also the director of NFL relations at AU, called the Cottons Monday morning in an effort to set up an in-home visit from Chizik.

That likely won’t happen, Cotton, Sr. said.

“Coach Lolley called and was trying to set up a visit for Coach Chizik. Coach Chizik wanted to come up and speak with Ray, but I let them know he was decommitting from Auburn today.”

Cotton, Sr. told AuburnSports.com Sunday that he nor his son were impressed with the Chizik hire. Chizik was hired away from Iowa State by Auburn after posting a 5-19 record over the last two seasons.

“I know about Chizik’s good background with Auburn, but I look at Auburn as being on the same level with the Floridas and Georgias, a top 10 school in the country. It’s a big-time program,” said Cotton, Sr. Monday. “And then we go out and hire a guy that has five wins over the last couple of years.

“That definitely brings some concern. I don’t know if there is a lot of confidence there from me as a father. As a parent, my comment is Auburn did nothing to prove to me they want to be a winner.”

Cotton, Sr. said his son would turn his attention to Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Florida and Arkansas. Cotton is the seventh prospect to decommit from the Tigers since Tuberville’s departure.

Assistants Out

All of Auburn’s current assistants were told Sunday night in a meeting to look for new jobs, just hours after new head coach Gene Chizik arrived on the Plains to succeed Tommy Tuberville.

Willis was instrumental in keeping the Tigers’ 2009 recruiting class in tact during the coaching search.

Linebackers coach James Willis, defensive ends coach Terry Price, defensive line coach Don Dunn, running backs coach Eddie Gran, tight ends coach Steve Ensminger and wide receivers coach Greg Knox had all stayed on to help recruit for the Tigers during the coaching search.

Director of NFL Relations Phillip Lolley and Director of Football Operations Jimmy Perry are expected to be retained.

Former Auburn linebacker coach Joe Whitt is expected to help out with recruiting during the transition.

Three names have surfaced as potential coaches to join Chizik’s new staff including Georgia assistants Rodney Garner and Stacy Searels, and current Kansas State co-defensive coordinator and former Clemson DC Vic Koenning.

Two members of Chizik’s former staff at Iowa State, defensive backs coach Jeff Koonz and defensive line coach Mike Pelton, are likely to join Chizik in Auburn. Koonz and Pelton both have Auburn ties. Koonz was a graduate assistant at Auburn under Chizik. Pelton was a player on the Tigers’ 1993 undefeated team.

Well…lets get behind him…war eagle coach

Former Players React

Cornerback Carlos Rogers won the Thorpe Award in 2004 as the nation’s top defensive back. He plays now for the Washington Redskins. Chizik was his position coach. “This was the best decision Auburn could have made,” Rogers said. “Coach Chizik was like a dad to me. From a player and student point of view, he’s exactly what Auburn needs in a head coach.”

Dear Dr. Gogue, I am a 2005 Auburn Alum. I have recently heard news of the possible Gene Chizik hiring as our head coach of the Auburn football team. I understand the University is doing everything it can to do the right thing and make the right hire; however, I have to echo the concerns of other Auburn alums and fans around the world. Coach Chizik won just 5 games in two years at ISU. He has not proven himself. We need a leader of our University. It is my opinion that man is Turner Gill. Turner Gill would bring Auburn into the 21st century and give the players, fans, alums, and the town of Auburn someone to look up to. He is a proven coach winning the MAC championship this year! Please take the opinions of the alums and fans of this school, who bleed orange and blue in everything they do, and reconsider this hire.

WHY WASNT GILL HIRED!??!?!?!? I WANT ANSWERS!

 From the ISU athletic director…

“Gene (Chizik) confirmed for me today that he is accepting the head coaching position at Auburn. I’m disappointed for our Iowa State fans and student-athletes that he has chosen to leave our program after only two seasons. I understand that it (Auburn) is a dream job for him, but the timing and the way it played out has been hurtful and disappointing. Although this is a significant set back, we will get through the challenge because the Iowa State University athletics program is far greater than one person.”

3:47 PM SATURDAY

Gene Chizik was not on the plane. Jay Jacobs and two assistant athletic directors got off of the plane. They briefed the media for a minute.

Jacobs said, “We’re still in the process, we’re moving along. I think if everything continues to go well, I’ll have the process narrowed down pretty well. We’ll go from there.”

Someone then followed with, “Is it true or false about hiring Gene Chizik?”

Jacobs responded, “We’re still just working through the deal.”

There were approximately 20 fans at the airport with at least one of them booing Jacobs when he got off the plane.

FIRE JAY JACOBS IF THIS HAPPENS

YOU PICKED THIS GUY TO BE OUR HEAD COACH?!?!

Gene Chizik? When you could have chosen Turner Gill? I don’t understand. It’s a lateral move at best from Coach Tuberville to Chizik. We didn’t need a homerun but we needed to make a splash. Coach Gill would have been that guy this University needs! Today, I am not proud to be an Auburn Tiger – and I blame you Jay Jacobs.  No recruits want to hear what Gene Chizik has to say after Saban, Meyer, Richt, Nutt, and now Mullen sit down with them. Winless in the Big 12. Marginal recruiter, at best. No personality. No charisma. No national recognition. Nothing positive emerges from this. This proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that we have the worst, most inept, most pathetic athletic department, combined with the most damaging outside booster influence in all of college football. And apparently, zero leadership at the top of the university who could step up and stop this monumental blunder. We hired our absolute worst candidate. Yeah, lets get the fan base behind this one, ppppffffft. I stand behind Auburn until the day I die, but I will not stand behind Jay Jacobs and this decision, a decision that is pumping our program full of meritocracy War eagle auburn.
