Alabama to hear soon from NCAA

What most everybody agrees on is that there will be some type of probation for the Crimson Tide, probably a two-year term. What that means is that they can’t have anything happen NCAA-related during that period or there could be serious consequences.

It’s still unclear what kind of penalties Alabama will receive. Initially, the feeling was that there wouldn’t be any scholarship losses. But as the process has dragged on, there have been increasing rumblings that the Tide could lose a scholarship or two for each of the next two years.

Q & A w/Chizik

Q: Do you think you have quarterbacks who fit the system you’re trying to run?
“I do. I feel like there’s a little bit of adaption to the players as well. Gus (Malzahn) and I have talked numerous, numerous hours about things our guys can do. You go in with a system and you can’t always try to fit a round peg into a square hole, so you’ve got to adapt and adjust on the run, which we’re constantly trying to do. I think what the offense calls for, we’ve got guys that come close to fitting what we want. But again, that’s why we’re out recruiting.”

Q: Auburn had difficulties last year going back and forth with a quarterback. Is it important to settle on one?
“It is important. We definitively would like to settle on one, there’s no question about that. That’s not writing off the possibility of us having to use more than one, because I’m never going to back myself in a corner and say never.”

Q: Where is Auburn football now in relation to the SEC?
“We’re a ways off. I’m not trying to paint a doom-and-gloom picture, and I certainly don’t want delusions of grandeur, either. We’re somewhere in between. But we’ve got our work cut out for us, but we’ve got a plan. Realistically, I remember what our 2004 football team looked like after we walked off the field after that Sugar Bowl. We’re a ways from that, and that’s what we have to get back to.”

Recruiting: Star system has flaws, coach says

“I can take a three-star and make him a four-star, and I can take a four-star and make him a three- or two-star with the contacts I have,” Lawing said. “That’s how ridiculous recruiting on the Internet is. I took Chris Culliver (USC safety) from a three- to a five-star in three weeks. All you’ve got to do is talk to the right people.”

Lawing added that a danger of the rating systems is the fans are sometimes misled about the talent level of a prospect and a class overall.

“There are a lot of staffs getting fired for unrealistic expectations,” Lawing said.
