In the first Iron Bowl ever played in Auburn. A game that Bear Bryant himself said would never be played on the Plains. The #11 Tigers beat #2 and previously undefeated Alabama 30–20.

“There’s not going to be any pressure,” said quarterback Greg McElroy, who will be making his first Iron Bowl start. “It’s just going to be the same old team that we played last year.”
