Spanish Fort High School center Reese Dismukes, one of the top in-state college football prospects in the Class of 2011, announced his commitment to Auburn today.
Dismukes (6-3, 272), whose brother Jonah was a kicker at Alabama, had narrowed his choices to Auburn and Alabama, but also had offers from Florida State, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and Stanford.
He announced his decision in front of teammates, classmates, family and media at the school’s library Wednesday afternoon, but said he really made up his mind two weeks ago on a visit to the Plains.
“When you go there you don’t see a different picture any time you go,” he said. “You get the same thing every time. It doesn’t matter what day it is or who you’re seeing there. Everyone’s family.”
Dismukes had originally been set to announce a decision shortly after signing day, but canceled it. He said Wednesday that the extra time helped him make a more informed decision — and a different one than he’d originally planned.
“It would have turned out different if I’d have made it then, but things happen for a reason,” he said. “I just realized it wasn’t for me. My parents … weren’t too happy with me because I kind of did it on my own. They just wanted me to (sit) back and look and make sure what I was doing was right and not step into something that I didn’t know what I was getting into.”
Dismukes said he may continue to take visits, but added “as of right now I’m 100 percent committed to Auburn.”.
